With this in mind we have devised a working methodology which provides a cost effective way of minimizing your exposure to this risk.
Level 1 – Desk Top Review A high level review of relevant records forwarded to our office in relation to benefits, to ascertain whether the major items had been identified and correctly declared.
Features
We would review the last completed forms P11D to confirm that they contain typical items, based on our knowledge of the average dealership.
We would consider any averaging agreement in place, in so far as it is up to date and reasonable, including a review of demonstrator cars registered.
We would also review whether company car fuel has been properly disclosed, and review any records held to establish that there is no fuel benefit.
Benefits
As the completion of forms P11D is a major risk area with HMRC, you would gain some comfort in establishing that there are no areas which could trigger a potential PAYE Compliance Visit.
Level 2 – Full Day Site Visit
An extension of the desk top review, focusing additional time on specific risk areas, plus an investigation of business specific issues relevant to the motor trade.
Features
We will spend a full day on site to review the relevant records and to discuss the areas and extent of our inspection, focusing on any aspects which we have identified as potentially leading to PAYE Compliance visits by HMRC.
We will also address more specific issues, tailored to the requirements of your business and may include expenses claims, entertaining, other benefits, possible dispensations and / or PAYE Settlement agreements.

You would be reassured that the major risk areas had been identified and addressed, reducing both the risk indicators, and extent of a future HMRC Compliance visit.
Level 3 – Full Analytical Report
A comprehensive review of all records which would typically be covered during a HMRC Compliance visit. This would be one or two days on site reviewing prime records, identifying any areas of weakness, and providing a written report of our findings.
Features
The review will cover all aspects of employer compliance and would include an examination of payroll records, termination payments, forms P11D, customer and staff entertaining, expenses payments and cash books.
We would have an in depth discussion with the director / accountant prior to commencing work.
Benefits
A detailed report on the results of our findings will be prepared, with suggestions for improving compliance issues moving forward.
Having identified and quantified any areas of noncompliance, you will be aware of the potential risk and tax cost to the business.
